The Read

The format is simple and has not changed: six o’clock, loud guitars, originals and covers run together, done in time for the room to turn over for whatever comes next. Carroll is a songwriter first and a rock-and-roll lifer second, which is why the set never turns into a bar-band greatest-hits shuffle. This is the East Nashville version of after-work drinks. Free or close to it, no ticketing anxiety, people arriving straight from a job. The crowd skews toward regulars who have done this a hundred times and treat it accordingly. Show up, get a beer, stand near the back, be somewhere else by eight if you want. That flexibility is most of the appeal.

The Room

The 5 Spot

1006 Forrest Ave

A Five Points bar and venue since 2003. Motown Mondays have been running so long and hit so hard that GQ called it the most stylish party in America.
