The Read

Release shows are strange little ceremonies. The songs are brand new to the room and thoroughly over-lived by the people playing them, and that gap can go either way. The Volcano Brothers are doing it in a neighborhood bar during happy hour rather than in a rented theater, which lowers the stakes considerably and usually improves the result. The 5 Spot on a Saturday evening turns over fast — the six o’clock slot ends in time for whatever the room does at nine. Expect the new material played in sequence or close to it, expect friends in the crowd shouting things, expect vinyl or CDs on a table near the door. This is what putting out a record actually looks like for most bands, and it is better in person than the streaming numbers will ever suggest.

The Room

The 5 Spot

1006 Forrest Ave

A Five Points bar and venue since 2003. Motown Mondays have been running so long and hit so hard that GQ called it the most stylish party in America.
