The Read

The Pretty Reckless are unfashionable in the specific way that eventually becomes an asset: big riffs, blues bones, a singer who belts rather than emotes. Momsen’s voice is the engine, and she uses it at full weight for most of a set. There is no irony in the delivery, which is exactly why the fanbase is as loyal as it is. The Ryman is an odd fit for a band this loud, and that is part of the appeal. Pews, wood, and a room that was built for hymns, hosting arena-scale rock at close range. The sound is unforgiving here — everything is exposed. A band that can actually play tends to sound better; one that cannot gets found out.

The Room

Ryman Auditorium

116 5th Ave N

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
