The Read

The Mavericks have spent their whole run stitching country to Cuban music, Tex-Mex, and mid-century pop crooning without ever sounding like a fusion project. Malo sings like Orbison with a rhythm section that wants to dance, and the band behind him — horns, accordion, tremolo guitar — treats the whole thing as a party rather than a thesis. The Ryman suits them for the same reason it suits gospel: the room amplifies sincerity and exposes anyone faking it. Expect a crowd that gets out of the pews early and stays out. Few bands still touring can make a seated historic venue feel like a dance hall by the fourth song.

Ryman Auditorium

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
