The Brothers Comatose work the old configuration — guitar, banjo, fiddle, upright bass, no drummer — and then push it harder than the instrumentation suggests. Sibling harmony is the spine of it, which is the part you cannot rehearse into a band that does not already have it. The songs lean toward the rowdy end of folk rather than the reverent end. Exit/In is the right size for this: a room where a string band has to earn quiet instead of being handed it. Expect a crowd that shouts back, a few unaccompanied numbers around a single mic, and a set that speeds up as the night goes. Early October in Nashville is thick with acoustic music. This is the version of it that comes with a bar tab.
