The Read

Larry Cordle is a songwriter with a long catalog of cuts to his name and a bluegrass singer’s instinct for where a harmony line belongs. Val Storey has the kind of high, clean voice that gospel material is written for. Together the format is old and specific: a few voices, acoustic instruments, songs everyone in the room already half-knows. An afternoon show at the Station Inn draws a different crowd than a Tuesday night — older, earlier, more likely to sing along under their breath. You do not have to be religious for this to land; the appeal is the blend and the plainness of the delivery. It is over by dinner, which is its own argument for going.

The Room

Station Inn

402 12th Ave S

A cinder-block room where bluegrass has been played since 1974, while the Gulch built a luxury neighborhood around it and left it alone.

Po'boy bread flown in from New Orleans. The chicken and andouille gumbo is the anchor; the debris fries are worth knowing about. This is the real Cajun thing.
