The Read

Shawn James works the darker end of folk and blues — stomping arrangements, minor keys, and a low, enormous voice that could carry a room without amplification. The material leans mythic: sin, water, retribution, the standard furniture of American murder ballads, delivered without a wink. It works because he commits to it completely. Exit/In is a long narrow rock club on Elliston Place with decades of ghosts in it and a stage that suits performers who plant their feet and stay there. The danger with this kind of music is theatricality tipping over into costume. The best version leaves a song unaccompanied long enough for the room to go silent, then brings the band back in. Tuesday, no distractions.

Exit/In

2208 Elliston Pl

Opened October 23, 1971. Jimmy Buffett auditioned on the half-finished stage and was hired on the spot. Steve Martin played here so often in the mid-70s that he credits those nights as making him 'really, really funny.'
