Sixty years fronting the Who left Daltrey with a specific instrument: a bellow with real technique underneath it, built to cut through Townshend’s guitar and Moon’s drums. Solo, without that wall, the singing gets exposed. He has generally handled that by leaning into the songs rather than the spectacle, which is the right call. The Ryman is unusually cruel to legacy acts and unusually generous to good ones. There is no production to hide in and the acoustics carry everything, including the strain. Expect Who material, expect stories, expect a crowd that has waited decades for this particular pairing of singer and room. The risk is real, and that is part of what makes it worth attending.
