The Read

Punch Brothers use the standard bluegrass instrumentation — mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass — to play music that borrows freely from chamber composition, pop, and whatever Chris Thile has been thinking about lately. The band’s real distinction is ensemble precision: dynamics shift on a dime, parts interlock, and long-form pieces hold together without a drummer to enforce anything. The Ryman is the obvious room and still the right one. The acoustics reward a band that plays quietly on purpose, and this group builds entire passages out of near-silence before letting the whole thing open up. A Saturday night for people who want technical brilliance that still sounds like it is being felt rather than executed.

The Room

Ryman Auditorium

116 5th Ave N

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
