The Read

Protomartyr came out of Detroit playing post-punk with the romance stripped off — guitar figures that circle rather than resolve, a rhythm section that grinds, and vocals that are closer to declaiming than singing. The writing is dense and grim and frequently very funny if you are paying attention. Few bands sustain this much tension without ever quite releasing it. J.R.C.G. opens, which suggests the night stays weird rather than settling into straight rock. The Basement East gives it a proper club setting: standing floor, decent volume, no seats to make anyone comfortable. A Tuesday show for people who would rather be unsettled than entertained, and the band has been reliably excellent live for a decade.
