Fear Factory built their sound on machine precision — drums programmed to the millisecond in feel if not in fact, guitars used as rhythm architecture, the whole thing engineered around the tension between the mechanical and the human. Mushroomhead come from the other direction: masks, multiple vocalists, sampled chaos, a Cleveland art-metal spectacle that has never been especially concerned with restraint. Nine Treasures open, bringing Mongolian folk instrumentation into metal, which is not a novelty when it is done this seriously. The Basement East is a club, not an arena, and that is the appeal — a co-headline package like this usually plays rooms with barricades and distance. Expect the low end to be a physical problem. Expect a crowd that has waited a long time for both bands to come through on the same ticket.
