Motown Monday is a records night, not a band night, and it has outlasted most live residencies in this city by understanding one thing: people want to dance to songs they already love. The playlist runs through the Motown catalog and out the sides of it — Stax, Northern soul, whatever keeps the floor honest. Nothing is ironic about it. The 5 Spot is a Five Points neighborhood bar with cheap drinks and a floor that gets sticky by midnight. It starts at nine on a Monday, which filters the crowd down to service-industry regulars and people who have decided the week can wait. Low stakes, high commitment. Wear shoes you don’t mind.
