The Read

The writing is sharp and unsentimental, but the guitar is what separates her from the field — a serrated, slightly overdriven tone and phrasing that owes more to blues players than to folk. Her voice carries the same edge: conversational, occasionally flat on purpose, always intelligible. She sounds like someone stating a position rather than sharing a feeling. The Blue Room is very small, very well engineered, and unforgiving of anyone relying on production. Music this dependent on tone and delivery belongs here. Expect a trio or something close to it, expect the guitar to be louder in the mix than the genre usually permits, and expect the audience to be quiet enough that it matters. Buy ahead — the room does not hold many people.
