The Read

L’Rain’s music resists being described as songs in the ordinary sense — pieces drift, fold in on themselves, dissolve into ambient passages and then reassemble around a groove you did not hear coming. Underneath the experimentalism is a real feel for R&B and gospel harmony, which is what keeps the whole thing from being an academic exercise. It is grief music, largely, and it moves. Third Man’s Blue Room is a hard, small, recording-first space, which suits work this textural — the details survive. A few hundred people, a seven o’clock start, and a set that will require some patience before it pays. Show up willing to be lost for a while. It is one of the more genuinely adventurous bookings on the November calendar.
