The Read

Alaina arrived as a teenager on a national singing competition, which is a hard origin to outrun in this town. What she has built since is a mainstream country career with a real voice at the center of it — big, controlled, capable of the belt but better on the songs that make her pull back. She is a strong live singer, which is not automatic in her lane. The Ryman is the room where that gets tested. No production to hide behind, an audience seated close, acoustics that expose anything not actually being sung. A Thursday-night headline here reads as a milestone show, and those tend to bring out the best version of an artist’s set — more of the songs they wanted to play, fewer of the ones they were told to.

The Room

Ryman Auditorium

116 5th Ave N

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
