The 400 Unit have quietly become one of the best rock bands working, largely because they never made a show of it: Sadler Vaden’s guitar, arrangements that leave air around songs whose whole business is precision. Isbell’s writing is unusually literal for a genre that runs on suggestion, and that specificity is why the quiet songs land as hard as the loud ones. A multi-night stand lets him move the setlist around instead of playing the same hour six times. The Bo-Keys bring Memphis instrumental soul to the opening slot, which is a deliberate framing — it places the evening in a lineage rather than a genre. The Ryman is where Isbell has done his most documented work, and he knows exactly what that room does to a held note. Any night of this run is defensible. This is a good one to pick.
