The Read
Ambolley is a Ghanaian saxophonist, singer, and bandleader who came up through the highlife tradition and pushed it toward funk and Afro-jazz. The sound is guitar-driven and horn-punctuated, with rhythms that keep moving sideways rather than resolving where a Western ear expects. He has been at it for more than fifty years and shows no interest in slowing the tempo for anyone. Seeing an artist with this much history in a room the size of the Blue Room is the sort of thing that only happens because someone at Third Man made a specific decision. Expect a band, expect dancing, expect the set to run on groove logic where songs blend into one another. Capacity is small and this will not stay quiet.
