Trapp’s trio format is deliberately exposed — guitar, bass, drums, nowhere to hide. He came out of the Don Kelley band at Robert’s and years on the road with Jerry Douglas, and the vocabulary shows it: country bends, jazz substitutions, blues phrasing, and a willingness to follow an idea somewhere ugly before pulling it back. What makes the residency worth repeating is that it is genuinely different week to week. Songs get restructured on the spot because the rhythm section can follow him anywhere. Five o’clock start in a Five Points bar with regulars at the rail and no ceremony whatsoever. This is what a working musician’s night off looks like when he is showing off a little.
