Trapp’s trio night is a residency in the old sense — same room, same night, no promotion, and the quality does not fluctuate with the size of the crowd. He calls what he does roots fusion, which mostly means country and blues vocabulary played with jazz timing and a willingness to abandon the plan mid-song. A bass player and a drummer who can follow that are the entire production budget. Six o’clock means you catch it before the evening properly begins, which is the trick most people miss. The 5 Spot is a Five Points bar with cheap drinks, no dress code, and a stage a few inches off the floor. Nothing about the setting announces that you are watching a player of this caliber. That gap is the pleasure.
