Trapp came up in Don Kelley’s honky-tonk band at Robert’s, the four-nights-a-week apprenticeship that also produced Brent Mason and Daniel Donato, then spent six years touring with Jerry Douglas. With a trio he is harder to categorize — country and blues phrasing tangled up with jazz timing and the occasional detour that has nothing to do with either. There is no set list to speak of. He plays what the night suggests. The early slot is the underrated part. Six o’clock at the 5 Spot means the room is half regulars and half people who wandered up from dinner, and Trapp plays to both without adjusting. You can be home by nine having watched playing that would cost forty dollars in a theater. Weeknight Nashville at its most casually absurd.
