Trapp came up in Don Kelley’s band at Robert’s — the four-nights-a-week honky-tonk apprenticeship that also produced Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert, and Daniel Donato — then spent six years touring with Jerry Douglas. What he plays with a trio does not sit in one genre. Country phrasing, blues weight, jazz turns, the occasional detour that has nothing to do with any of it. The 5 Spot is a Five Points bar with a low ceiling and no pretense, which is the correct frame. Six o’clock start means you can catch the whole thing and still have a night afterward. No cover story, no occasion, just a player this good doing it in front of regulars on a Wednesday.
