The Read

Trapp learned the trade in the Don Kelley band at Robert’s — the four-nights-a-week Lower Broadway apprenticeship that has turned out an unreasonable number of great players — and later spent years on the road with Jerry Douglas. What the trio does is harder to file: country and blues phrasing tangled up with jazz harmony, and a willingness to follow an idea somewhere unhelpful just to see what happens. The 5 Spot is a Five Points bar with a low stage and cheap drinks, and this is the early slot, which means you can catch the whole thing and still be home at a reasonable hour. No occasion, no ticket drama, no reverence. Just a player of this caliber treating a neighborhood bar as a place worth working.
