The Read

The band came out of Brooklyn playing angular guitar rock and has been mutating steadily since — looser, weirder, more indebted to seventies rock and free-jazz restlessness than to the post-punk revival they got filed under. Cameron Winter’s voice is the polarizing element: strangled, theatrical, and completely committed. People either find it thrilling or unlistenable, and both reactions are defensible. The Ryman is a serious step up in room size and reverence for a band this early, and the mismatch is interesting. The acoustics will expose the arrangements, which are more intricate than the noise suggests. Expect songs to go somewhere other than where they started. Expect a crowd split between people who read about them and people who have already seen them do this in a much smaller room.

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
