John McCauley’s band came up out of Providence playing songs that could go folk, country, or straight bar-rock depending on the night and the hour. The voice is a rasp with real range underneath it, and the writing has always been better than the shambolic delivery lets on. Two decades in, the ragged edges are the point rather than an accident. The Basement East is a good room for a band that treats the setlist as a suggestion. Standing floor, high stage, crowd close enough to change the temperature. Expect songs to fall apart and get put back together, expect a cover nobody saw coming, and expect the quiet one in the middle of the set to land harder than it should.
