The Read

The band came out of Ohio playing acoustic music with a rock band’s sense of dynamics — banjo and open-tuned guitar under choruses designed to be shouted back. Taylor Meier’s voice has a frayed quality that keeps the sweetness in check. It is uncomplicated music, and the band does not pretend otherwise. The risk with this kind of show is that the crowd sings so loudly the songs stop being songs. The Ryman’s pews and famously forgiving acoustics tend to sand that down; the room rewards the quiet numbers more than the anthems, and good bands notice. Expect the ending of the night to be softer than the middle.
