The Read
The jam runs on the standard bluegrass social contract: a circle, a tune called, a key established, and solos passed around in order. Whoever shows up with an instrument can play, which means the level varies wildly from week to week and hour to hour. Sometimes it is genuinely great. Sometimes it is four people negotiating a tempo. Both are the point. The Station Inn has sat in the Gulch since 1974, outlasting the neighborhood that used to surround it, and this is the night that most resembles what the place was built for. No cover. Beer and pizza. A room full of people who play for a living sitting in with people who never will. Seven o’clock on a Sunday, and no reason to arrive at any particular time.
