The Read

The early records made him a festival-folk fixture in the UK, all fingerpicked guitar and coastal melancholy. Everything since has drifted toward texture — looser structures, more atmosphere, guitars treated as sound sources rather than accompaniment. It is a harder listen and a more interesting one, and it makes the older songs land differently when they turn up. The Ryman is the right room for music this dependent on quiet. Every reverb tail and half-buried harmony carries here, and the audience for this kind of show tends to hold still for it. Expect long instrumental passages, expect the set to prioritize mood over hits, and expect the loudest moments to be genuinely loud in contrast.

Ryman Auditorium

Built in 1892 as a tabernacle by river captain Thomas Ryman, who was converted at a Sam Jones revival — little did he know it would become the church of American roots music.
