About This Venue
The in-the-round format started in 1984 when Don Schlitz and Tom Schuyler moved to the center of the venue so the audience couldn't talk as easily. The no-talking rule came next — the crowd enforced it, not management. Garth Brooks got his record deal here in 1987 after Capitol exec Lynn Schults saw him play and pulled him into the kitchen. Scott Borchetta saw a 15-year-old Taylor Swift perform here and signed her as Big Machine's founding artist.
Kurland sold to the Nashville Songwriters Association in 2008. She called it 'more of a donation than a corporate sale.' A hundred seats in a strip mall in Green Hills — and it has changed more careers than most buildings in this city.
