The Read

The Red Clay Strays came out of Mobile playing a hybrid nobody was asking for — Southern rock, gospel phrasing, fifties-country ache — and Brandon Coleman sings it with a tremble that sounds borrowed from a much older record. Their rise happened almost entirely through live shows and word of mouth rather than radio. That tends to produce a durable audience. The question with any band that scales this fast is whether the music survives the room. Their strength is atmosphere and restraint, both of which arenas punish. Watch for how they handle the slow songs; if those still work at this size, the band is exactly as good as the last two years suggested. Doors early at 6:30.

Layla Vartanian opened it in 1997 — the only female-owned independent bar on Lower Broadway. While everything around it plays country radio, Layla's books bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, Americana. Vintage license plates on the ceiling. Better drink prices than anything near it.
