The Read
The band emerged from the Paisley Underground scene in early-eighties Los Angeles, taking the Velvet Underground’s drone and the sprawl of long-form guitar rock and building songs that leave room for both. Steve Wynn writes with a novelist’s eye for grim detail. The reunited version has been more productive and less nostalgic than anyone expected — the newer records are not a formality. 3rd & Lindsley is seated and mixed by people who take it seriously, which matters for a band whose good nights depend on dynamics rather than volume. Expect a set built to drift — songs that stretch well past their recorded length and go somewhere unplanned. That drift is the entire point, and it either lands or it does not on any given night. When it lands, there is not much like it.
