The Read
The record was made in the middle of a national argument the band did not start and refused to end quietly, and it turned out to be the best thing they ever did — harder, sadder, and better written than the material that made them famous. “Not Ready to Make Nice” gets the headlines, but the album’s real weight sits in the songs about family and exhaustion. Time has been extraordinarily kind to it. Album shows can turn into museum pieces, and that is the risk here. The version that works treats the sequence as a set rather than a ceremony and lets the playing carry the nostalgia — Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer are still formidable instrumentalists, and that gets forgotten. A Nashville crowd brings its own history to this band. That will be in the room whether anyone addresses it or not.
