The organ trio is a format built for rooms exactly this size. The B3 covers bass and chords at once, the drums stay in the pocket, and the guitar gets to be melodic without fighting anyone for space. It swings by default. Even a mediocre organ trio is pleasant; a good one is hard to walk out on. Rudy’s at nine on a weeknight is a specific pleasure — the dinner crowd has thinned, the room is dark, and the band settles in rather than performing. Sit at the bar if the tables are gone. This is background music only if you insist on treating it that way, and the players will notice if you do.
