Struggle Jennings works the seam between hip-hop and hard country — prison narratives, addiction, redemption, delivered over tracks that borrow as much from Southern rap as from anything on Music Row. He has been a fixture in the Jelly Roll orbit for years, which is where a lot of this audience found him. The material is blunt and unembarrassed about it. A Broadway room on a Thursday night gives this a strange and useful frame: a genre that grew up outside the industry playing a few doors down from the tourist honky-tonks. Expect a devoted, loud crowd who treat the songs as testimony. This is not a subtle show, and it is not trying to be.
