The Read
The fringed mask started as a gimmick and became a frame — anonymity letting him work in a mode of country music, big-voiced and melodramatic, that would read as parody without it. The baritone is the real asset. He sings in a lineage that runs through Roy Orbison and the more theatrical end of the Nashville Sound, and he sings it straight. The live show leans into spectacle: costume, staging, a band tight enough to sell the drama. Truth is a large room and this material fills it. Expect a queer country audience that has been waiting a long time for a headliner who does not treat their presence as a talking point, and expect the ballads to land harder than the camp suggests they should.

James Beard semifinalist before the restaurant even opened. The tortillas are the whole deal. Get whatever's wrapped in one.

After: Stay in The Gulch for one more only if the room still has momentum.
