The Read
Opry Country Christmas is the house doing what it has always done — short sets, fast turnover, generations stacked on one bill — with the seasonal repertoire bolted on. The carols are a given. The interesting part is watching individual artists decide how straight to play them, since the Opry stage rewards sincerity and punishes irony almost instantly. Everyone still steps into the six-foot circle cut from the Ryman floor, which is the point of coming here in any season. Expect families, out-of-towners, and locals who treat this as an annual obligation in the good sense. Not a concert so much as a broadcast-shaped ritual that happens to have a tree on stage.

The Opry left the Ryman on March 15, 1974. President Nixon played piano on opening night. Roy Acuff supervised the installation of the circle of wood cut from the Ryman stage.
