The Read

Jimmy Hall is a Southern-rock and blues singer with a harmonica player’s sense of phrasing, and a résumé that runs from “Keep On Smilin’” to years of work as a hired gun for people who could have called anyone. The Musician Spotlight format is built around exactly that — the mechanics of a career spent in service of other people’s records, with live playing threaded through the conversation. The Ford Theater is a seated room and the program is included with museum admission, which makes a one o’clock Sunday one of the better-value hours in Nashville. Expect stories that would never survive a stage set, and expect the singing to be the surprise. Roughly an hour, out in daylight, no line at the bar because there isn’t one.
