The Read

The Chuck Wagon Gang has existed, in one configuration or another, since the Depression era — a family gospel group whose close four-part harmony shaped how country singers approach a hymn. The personnel has turned over many times across those decades, which is part of what makes the group interesting: the arrangement outlived everyone who invented it. The Musician Spotlight series pairs performance with conversation about how the sound actually works. The Ford Theater is a seated, well-lit room and the program is included with museum admission, which makes this one of the best cheap afternoons in town. One o’clock start, roughly an hour, and you are back outside in daylight. For anyone who wants to understand where country harmony singing came from without sitting through a lecture.
