The Read
Music City Roots runs on an old and durable format: several acts, short sets, a house-show cadence, and a broadcast sensibility that keeps the whole thing moving. Bluegrass into songwriter into something with horns, with no requirement that any of it match. When the bill is good the variety is the pleasure, and when a set is not for you it is over in twenty minutes. Harken Hall gives it a proper stage and a seated crowd. The pre-Thanksgiving slot means a mix of locals and visiting family, which is the audience this format was designed for — nobody has to already be a fan. Seven o’clock, several acts, home at a reasonable hour with cooking still to do.
