The Read
Whatever else is true about Morrissey, the singing has held up: the swooping baritone, the phrasing that turns self-pity into architecture, the Smiths songs that remain some of the best-written pop music in English. Live, the band plays them harder than Johnny Marr ever did, which some people find heretical and others find like being handed the songs back. The solo material is uneven and occasionally better than the reputation allows. The risk is well documented and worth stating plainly: shows get cancelled, moods turn, and the between-song commentary can go anywhere. That unpredictability is part of what people are buying. The Pinnacle is a large modern room with none of the mythology he usually performs against. If it happens and he is in the right frame, it will be one of the more intense nights of the month.
