The Read

Los Tigres del Norte built one of the most durable catalogs in North American popular music out of accordion, bajo sexto, and narrative nerve — corridos about migration, work, borders, cartels, and family, sung plainly enough that the stories carry. The band left Sinaloa for California young and has spent decades documenting that exact crossing for everyone who made it after them. Bridgestone is a big, bright room, and this is a big-room band by long habit: matching suits, long sets, an audience that sings entire verses back. If your only picture of Nashville arena shows is stadium country, this is the useful corrective. Come for the accordion, stay for the crowd, which is the actual event.

Layla Vartanian opened it in 1997 — the only female-owned independent bar on Lower Broadway. While everything around it plays country radio, Layla's books bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, Americana. Vintage license plates on the ceiling. Better drink prices than anything near it.
