The Read

The pseudonym is not a gimmick so much as a permission slip. Under it, Simpson has kept doing what he has always done — country phrasing dragged through psych rock, jam-band patience, and a singer who can hold a note longer than the room expects. The Dark Clouds are a full band, and the sets tend to sprawl. He is not a greatest-hits performer and never has been. Bridgestone is a big box for an artist this allergic to formula, which is exactly what makes the night interesting. The people who show up for a country arena show may not get one. The people who came for the guitar playing will get more than they bargained for. Somewhere in the middle, the two crowds usually meet.

The Room

Bridgestone Arena

501 Broadway

Nashville's central arena, where the biggest touring acts come and the night usually extends into Broadway before and after.

Layla's

0.2 mi · 3 min walk - Downtown

Layla Vartanian opened it in 1997 — the only female-owned independent bar on Lower Broadway. While everything around it plays country radio, Layla's books bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, Americana. Vintage license plates on the ceiling. Better drink prices than anything near it.
