The Read

The record came out in 2001 and was retitled almost immediately after September 11, which is a strange piece of history attached to an album mostly about being twenty-three and uncertain. “The Middle” became a cultural fixture; “Sweetness” became a chorus you can still start in a crowded room and finish collectively. What holds up is the construction — these are pop songs with guitars, built by people who cared about the bridge. Played in sequence, the album’s pacing becomes the night’s pacing, which means the quieter back half gets its due instead of being cut for time. Truth is a big room and it will be full of people who owned this on CD. Twenty-five years is long enough that the nostalgia has stopped being embarrassing and started being the point.
