The through-line of White’s career is friction — cheap guitars, unreliable gear, arrangements built to nearly fall apart. He has spent twenty-five years engineering situations where the show could go wrong, because that is where the good version lives. The setlists move without warning between White Stripes material, solo records, and whatever he has decided to reanimate that week. He is also, at this point, a Nashville institution: Third Man is a few miles away, and a portion of any hometown crowd will have worked for him at some point. That gives these shows a slightly different charge. Expect volume, expect a band that has to watch him constantly, and expect no fixed script.
