It's a Wonderful Life spends most of its running time on disappointment: a man whose plans are dismantled one by one by obligation and circumstance, in a town that never once lets him leave. The famous ending only works because the two hours before it are so unrelenting. Jimmy Stewart plays the breakdown for real, which is why the film still lands. The Franklin Theatre is a restored single screen on Main Street, and watching this with an audience instead of half-watching it on a couch changes the whole balance. Eight-thirty, two days after Christmas, when the sentiment has cooled enough to see the film underneath it. Bring someone who claims to hate it.
