The format does not change for the season: The Cowpokes play classic honky-tonk at dance tempos, the special-guest slot brings somebody good up without warning, and the floor decides how the night goes. What Halloween week adds is a visual — a certain number of people will two-step in full costume, entirely straight-faced, and it improves everything. The band will not acknowledge it. Eastside Bowl is a converted bowling alley in Madison with an unusually large floor, which is why the night landed there. There are always a few couples who have been doing this for decades and a larger number counting silently under their breath. Beginners are tolerated with more patience than you would expect. Seven o’clock, and the first hour is the forgiving one.
