Honky Tonk Tuesday is built around dancing rather than watching, which changes the physics of the whole night. The Cowpokes play the classic material at the correct tempos — shuffles, waltzes, the occasional Bakersfield stomp — and the special-guest slot means somebody good tends to sit in without warning. The band is there to serve the floor, not the other way around. Eastside Bowl is a converted bowling alley in Madison, which sounds like a novelty until you see the size of the dance floor. There are always a few couples who have clearly been doing this for thirty years and a much larger contingent counting under their breath. Nobody minds the beginners. Show up early if you want to learn something.
