Miller disappeared over the English Channel in 1944 and the band has essentially never stopped touring since. That makes it a repertory ensemble rather than a resurrection, and the honest pleasure is in the writing: reed voicings, section discipline, the arrangement of “In the Mood” engineered to make a room of strangers move at the same time. Charts this well-built are hard to ruin. The Franklin Theatre gives it a seated, restored-cinema frame that flatters the material. The crowd will skew older and know every cue. What carries the night is watching a horn section execute — this is music that lives or dies on whether fifteen people breathe together, and when they do it is genuinely thrilling.
