The Read

Foster the People had a hit so large it swallowed the rest of the catalog, and the interesting part of their career has been everything since — glossier, stranger, more indebted to funk and synth-pop than the radio version suggested. Mark Foster is a real arranger, and the deep cuts hold up better than the reputation implies. The live band leans into the groove more than the records do. A Tuesday show at a big club filters out the casual crowd, which usually improves this kind of night. You will get “Pumped Up Kicks,” because refusing to play it would be its own kind of pose. The question is what the rest of the set does with the hour it has before then.
