Art Alexakis wrote about broke households, absent fathers, and the specific exhaustion of a life going sideways, then set it to guitar hooks bright enough for a car stereo. “Santa Monica” and “Father of Mine” came from the same pen and the same decade, and the distance between them is the whole story of the band. Played live, the sadder material tends to be the part that holds up. The Sunday before Thanksgiving week is an odd slot, which will probably produce a good crowd — people home for the holiday with nothing to do yet, running into other people in the same position. Brooklyn Bowl is roomy and loud. Expect a set weighted toward the mid-nineties and a floor that sings the choruses at full volume without being asked.
