The Read

Josh Davis built the album out of other people’s records — drum breaks, orchestral fragments, spoken word pulled from crates — and assembled something with the emotional arc of a film rather than a mixtape. Thirty years later, the technique has been absorbed everywhere and the album has not been equaled at it. The melancholy is the part that dates least. Anniversary sets can turn into karaoke for the artist’s own past, which is the risk. DJ Shadow’s live shows have historically involved rebuilding the material in real time rather than pressing play, and that is the version worth turning up for. Marathon Music Works is a big open industrial room with the sound system this needs. Expect the visuals to matter as much as the music.

The Room

Marathon Music Works

1402 Clinton St

A large, open, industrial room in Marathon Village for the tours that need more floor than a club and less ceremony than an arena.
